Karlen was raised in Brooklyn, New York. Karlen is known to be a family woman, a loyal friend, a hard worker, and very caring. These characteristics remained constant in every step of her career as she strives to make her mark on the world. She is happily married to her husband, Prince, and they have a bright and loving seven-year-old daughter, Kapri. The journey of Karlen’s career is exciting and slightly complex.
Karlen graduated with her Bachelor of Science from the State University of New York in Albany, NY. Karlen was Pre-Med with a double major in Human Biology. She continued her journey to become a doctor and attended the American International School of Medicine (AISM) in Guyana, South America. She then relocated to Georgia to complete her clinical rotations. Karlen successfully attained her Medical Doctorate Degree, graduating Magna Cum Laude. To her family’s surprise, she fell in love with Georgia and made it her home.
After graduating from AISM, Karlen did an externship in a family practice while preparing for her medical boards. At this juncture, she decided she wanted to have a more global effect on the healthcare system instead of helping one patient at a time. This overwhelming desire developed into pursuing a master’s in Public Health at Emory, which she completed in 2019. Karlen’s goal is to combine her medical knowledge with public health to forge changes in the practice of medicine with policy changes in the healthcare system.
In the wake of the recent increasing rates of maternal mortality in the U.S., Karlen has made a significant addition to her skills and has become a certified Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator. Karlen’s path to forge changes in healthcare is a protracted process. With these increasing rates, she wanted to be a direct help now. As a Doula, Karlen can ensure that the needs and voices of the expecting parents are heard without being restricted by the slowly changing policies and practice of healthcare. Karlen spends quality time with expecting parents, creating their birth plans, and getting to know their desires to have a healthy, safe, and memorable birth experience.
